Frequently Asked Questions

Where does orientation take place?

Orientation takes place at our main Hope Reins office building. Upon arrival, please come into the building and help yourself to some refreshments. Orientation will take place both inside our office building and outside in the pasture and arena, so please dress accordingly. (see below)

Is experience with horses needed?

No experience is required. Volunteers will learn basic horse safety and care during orientation. We also have a number of tasks not associated with the horses that volunteers can choose to tackle – each volunteer is in control of which task(s) they select from the list of those needing completion.

What will I learn at the Orientation?

You will learn about the mission and work done at Hope Reins, basic safety measures, how to care for the horses, the various volunteer tasks available, and how to send/receive communication as a valued Hope Reins volunteer.

We will take a tour and meet the animals. Our equine partners currently include 4 horses and one mini donkey. We also have approximately a dozen chickens, 3 barn kitties, and one resident Cavachon on site. If time permits, you will have the option to participate in or observe an equine assisted group activity.

What is the age requirement?

Children must be at least 10 years old to volunteer. Anyone between 10 - 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Please complete a separate Volunteer Registration Form for each individual volunteer.

What is the dress code?

Closed toe shoes are required when working on the farm (no sandals, flip flops or steel-toed boots allowed). To volunteer, wear clothes you don't mind getting wet or dirty (layers are recommended). Note that the farm can get muddy so consider low heeled, rubber soled boots for wet or rainy days.

Where do I register?

All Hope Reins volunteers must complete a background check and participate in an orientation/training day prior to volunteering. The Volunteer Registration Form can be found HERE or in the Register Now tab above.

What happens if it rains?

In the event that a weather cancellation is required, you will be notified ahead of time. We will provide as much advanced notice as possible, but necessary last minute weather changes are unfortunately out of our control.

What should I bring to orientation?

Please bring appropriate attire and footwear (see above) and a positive attitude
**We highly recommend that you bring a device (cell phone, tablet, laptop) that can be used to install the Teams App and access the online Hope Reins volunteer information.

When can I start volunteering?

After completing orientation, you will be added to our ‘official’ list of volunteers and will be given access to our online sign up. The online volunteer sign up will outline both the various volunteer tasks available as well as specific times when volunteers are welcome to be on site completing these tasks. We ask that volunteers are present at Hope Reins only during the designated time frames out of respect for the privacy of our valued clients.
Please Note: No one is permitted to approach the animals without first completing orientation.

Can I bring my dog?

Sorry, no outside pets are allowed on the property.

What jobs do volunteers perform?

Some of the tasks we are seeking help with include: feeding horses, grooming horses, pasture clean up, maintaining equipment, yard work or snow removal, light cleaning inside the offices or on the exterior of the building, fencing upkeep, maintaining horse tack, organizing equine assisted psychotherapy tools, scooping horse poop, updating unfinished areas of the office building, and general grounds maintenance and upkeep.

Additional opportunities may be available in the following specialty areas: public relations (community outreach), grant writing, marketing, seeking horse sponsorships, vehicle maintenance, and exercising the horses. Hope Reins Christian Counseling Center relies on our dedicated group of volunteers to help care for our horses and property. Whether it’s daily chores like feeding or brushing horses, assisting with office work, or helping with grounds and maintenance, you will play an important role in the mission and success of Hope Reins. Most of our volunteers are ongoing members of our volunteer team. Individuals 18 years of age and older who complete a background check, the volunteer waivers, and an orientation day are eligible to join the herd of Hope Reins volunteers. For liability reasons, volunteers must be at least 10 years old. Anyone 10 to 17 years old must be under the supervision of a consenting parent or legal guardian at all times. Children under the age of 10 are unfortunately not permitted to be on site during volunteer hours.

Current clients receiving mental health support at Hope Reins are kindly asked to postpone involvement as a volunteer until after successful discharge from services. This is in order to assist both clients and therapists in maintaining focus on therapeutic goals and boundaries of the existing working relationship.

New Volunteer Orientation

All volunteers are required to attend an orientation training prior to carrying out any of the volunteer opportunities at Hope Reins. Our volunteer coordinator has established guidelines and standards to provide for the safety and comfort of both volunteers and the horses in our care. We will review these guidelines, discuss overall expectations, and practice the essential volunteer tasks during Volunteer Orientation. Light refreshments will be provided… donut worry, we embrace balance with one pastry and one cup of coffee in each hand!

After completing orientation, volunteer help is primarily needed on weekday evenings and/or weekends.
