Gus
Mini Donkey
Gus is the longer eared, younger half of the Hope Reins dynamic donkey duo. At just under four years old when he arrived, he came to us from a large donkey breeding program in the South with a heart full of sweetness and a healthy dose of skepticism. It didn’t take long to see that Gus wanted the love and attention we had to offer – he just wasn’t entirely convinced we had earned VIP access yet.
We brought Gus home at the time when Sully (our other mini-donkey) had just lost his long-time BFF and was thick in the depression stage of his grief. Gus arrived carrying his own wounds from the past, and the bond between two little donkeys quickly began. Watching the friendship form and the healing take place between Gus and Sully has been a true inspiration!
Despite his young age, Gus has always carried himself with the quiet wisdom of an old soul. Beneath his cautious exterior is a heart of gold and one of the gentlest personalities you’ll ever meet. Through patience, consistency, and plenty of opportunities to build trust at his own pace, Gus has formed meaningful connections with our staff and many of the clients he’s met along the way.
He still approaches new people and experiences with thoughtful caution (a quality that likely saved him in the past), but once you earn his trust, Gus models exactly what Hope Reins is all about. His journey is a beautiful reminder that healing takes time, trust can grow, and hope often arrives one careful step at a time.
